Following a lifetime of interest in natural healing and spiritual matters I first came into contact with Reiki during 1999 at the age of 50 through what at the time appeared to be a chance meeting with Jagran, my Reiki teacher. I was a mature student at the time and carrying out social research into the growing popularity of complementary therapies for an undergraduate dissertation.
My investigation involved interviewing practitioners and proprietors of natural health centres in Sheffield. Jagran was one of these people and my meeting with him was to change the course of my life! I knew there and then that I had to learn Reiki and booked a place on one of his 1st Degree workshops which would take place immediately after my graduation. Reiki was the missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle - something that I had been searching for all my life. My first treatment was a taster session given to me by one of the students at the training centre and although it only lasted fifteen minutes it was an absolutely amazing experience. I opened up to healing and went so deep within that the music notes playing in the background appeared to me as pure colour awakening me to the true meaning of vibrational healing.
Reiki promotes positive change. It is a time of new beginnings (hence the name of my Reiki room) and both from personal experience and from my experience teaching others it is Reiki that finds you rather than the other way around. In fact it certainly found me when I needed it the most and no sooner had I made the decision to learn Reiki than my teenage son started to get very ill indeed. As his kidney function began to deteriorate rapidly we began a programme of daily Reiki healing.
THE FIVE REIKI PRINCIPLES
Now Reiki is unique in that it can be used for self-healing and this helped me to cope mentally and emotionally. Contemplating the five Reiki principles (see below) gave me focus and although it was not always easy I learned to release my fear and anger. Kyo dake wa Just today Okoru-na Don’t get angry Shimpai suna Don’t worry Kansha shite Show appreciation Goo hage me Work hard (on yourself) Hito ni shinsetsu ni Be kind to others (Translated by Frank Arjava Petter from Dr Usui's manuscript) I learned to let go and let God and live one day at a time. I tried hard to be kind to others and was very grateful for all the blessings life bestowed on me - a supportive family, my own good health etc etc but was especially grateful that within weeks my son experienced a dramatic improvement in his physical wellbeing. His energy levels were soaring and Reiki soon eliminated his tiredness and all the other unpleasant symptoms. Eight months later I had progressed to 2nd Degree Reiki and was able to send him distance healing as well as give a hands-on treatment. As soon as my son reached sixteen he decided to learn Reiki to self treat and I continued with his daily treatment while at the same time working hard on my own self-healing.
TRAINING AS A MASTER/TEACHER
As time went by I knew Reiki would always play a major role in my life and Jagran accepted me on his training programme in 2004. I was taught the original Japanese techniques to supplement the Western Reiki I had been taught originally and after several months graduated as a Master/Teacher of Usui Reiki Ryoho and since then have been assisting other students on their spiritual path. Not long afterwards I gave my son the Reiki 2 attunement to amplify his energy and allow him to self-treat with distance healing as well as hands-on.
HEALING TRANSFORMATION
Reiki became a way of life for both of us and from first starting the treatment my son’s energy levels continued to improve. Nevertheless, his blood results proved he was far from well although end stage renal failure came seven years later than predicted - amazingly without any of the sickness, bloating, tiredness, itching or other symptoms displayed by kidney patients allowing him to complete his college course and gain his chef's diploma. Truly a miracle.
Now as well as being a healing system Reiki is a means of self-realisation and as I continue my Reiki journey I am more able to go with the flow of life instead of swimming against the tide. All in all our experience demonstrates that healing and curing are two very different things and it is important to release control and surrender to the Divine.
THE JOURNEY CONTINUES
My son has been dialysing since 2006 but thanks to Reiki still retains some of his kidney function. Thankfully he doesn't have the usual fluid restriction due to the fact that he is continuing to pass urine and unlike most dialysis patients his diet has become more flexible. Regular Reiki treatments keep him as well as can be under the circumstances and he continues to self-treat daily. He takes everything in his stride and truly is an inspiration.
TEACHING OTHERS
Reiki continues to be a driving force in my life. Every day it showers me with blessings and like Jagran before me my teaching honours the Usui Reiki Ryoho. However, Reiki training is a two-way process. The student learns from the teacher and vice versa and although without the teacher there would be no student, without the student there would be no teacher and I feel priveleged. Reiki is experiental and I have many stories to share with my students. In addition, they have stories for me and I never cease to be amazed at the wonders of Reiki.
Reiki is our birthright. It is pure unconditional love and we all have within ourselves the ability to heal.
