A BRIEF HISTORY OF DREAM THERAPY
Dream therapy
has been around throughout history of man and the earliest material depicting dream content can be traced back some 5000 years to Mesopotamia. The ancient Egyptians established dream temples for healing as did the ancient Greeks who dedicated them to the Greek God of medicine and healing. Roman sleep temples have been discovered as far apart as Gloucestershire in England and the Middle East.
The ancient Chinese believed the soul could separate from the body during sleep to communicate with the spirit world and indeed Shamans honour dreams as both wishes and experiences of the soul and re-enter dreams to access a deeper reality and commune with their spirit guides. The Australian Aboriginals place great importance on dreams and claim the spirit goes walkabout on a dream journey whilst Tibetan Buddhists believe dreams are practice for realising illusions after death.
20th Century psychiatrists Freud and Jung both worked with dreams during psychoanalysis. Freud used free association as a means to releasing repressed emotions whilst Jung worked with his notion of the 'collective unconscious' and archetypes. More recently Michael Jouvet argues dreams are subjct to genetic determinism and Kappanasian dream therapy suggests there are no experts. We are all individual and therefore only the dreamer can interpret their own dream.
DREAMING AND DREAM RECALL
Although many of us claim we don't dream, unless we have a sleep disorder, we usually dream several times each night as part of the sleep cycle. However, once we awaken our dreams can be elusive but making affirmations whilst in a relaxed state prior to sleeping such as "I will sleep soundly and remember my dreams" will assist with dream recall. If you practice Reiki a few minutes self-healing before moving is often all that is takes to remember your dreams. Therefore, on waking, rather than jumping straight out of bed, lie very still and in this relaxed state your dream memories will come flooding back. These need to be recorded accurately and although working with dreams takes a commitment on your part it is worthwhile. Keeping a notepad and pen by your bedside will allow you to jot down the key points for entering into your dream diary later.
We experience various types of dreams including lucid dreams, symbolic dreams, spirit dreams, recurring dreams, pre-cognitive dreams, nightmares etc etc and often issues that we thought were resolved will resurface during dreams. Whatever our thoughts on dreams we can gain a great deal of insight through their analysis and according to Kappas the most important book you will ever read on dreams is your own dream diary.
DREAMWORK WITH REIKI
My role as a dream therapist is to facilitate healing by helping you unlock the secrets of your dreams and this can be facilitated on a one to one basis or you can join a small workshop. Therefore you will need to record your dreams accurately every day for a week or so prior to your appointment and it helps if you keep a pen and pad by your bedside. Please record the time and date of your dream along with all the key information writing it out in the present tense. For example "I am walking through a field in pouring rain" rather than "I was walking through a field in pouring rain". Make a note of whether the dream was set in modern times or another era and include everything you can remember including any characters or animals in the dream and whether anything was said. Jot down inform as quickly as possible and you will find that once you start writing you begin to remember other things as your memory is activated.
Bring the dream(s) along to your appointment or the workshop and we will work through them together to help you make your own final analysis. If there is anything you don't understand we will re-enter the dream using creative visualisation and follow this with a Reiki session to heal any issues brought to the surface for your attention.
Please note you will need to allow 2 hours for a one-to-one session and can call me on 07963 071632 to arrange an appointment. Alternatively, you may join one of the dream workshops which are usually held in an evening with dates posted on the Calendar .
BENEFITS OF DREAMWORK WITH REIKI
Dreams reveal information from deep within the psyche and although it does take some commitment to recording your dreams regularly, ideally on a daily basis, it is well worth the effort. Analysing your dreams will give you greater clarity and understanding helping you to move forward with your life while Reiki will release any remaining blockages that are keeping you 'stuck' thereby facilitating healing.
